HIGH-TECH STYLE IN INTERIOR DESIGN

High-tech style

This design style as the term implies, is the celebration of high-technology expression and it’s a spinoff the Late Modernism. This style along with Minimalism, seem to be the two styles dominating the cinema scene, when depicting contemporary interiors.

Designers who excelled here are Norman Foster, Richard Rogers, Nicholas Grimshaw, Renzo Piano and others.

STYLE CHARACTERISTICS

The characteristics of this approach are mainly the following:
  1.    Industrial aesthetic.
  2.    Essentially lack of décor.
  3.  A limited color palette, usually encountering white, black, grey, blue or red.
  4.   Lots of metal and glass in the construction. Constructions elements such as metal columns, trusses, beams, or fasteners may also be revealed.
  5.  Glass windows and doors. Instead of curtains, louvers or Japanese curtains are used. Often, large expanses of glass are without any covering at all, allowing for great views.
  6.   Usually, metal and glass furniture; also, clean wood lines.
In some people's mind, the High-Tech style appears as too "cold" or not "cosy" enough for a home. In any case, this style, like Minimalism, doesn't go well with clutter and many nick-nacks...

The term is a bit obscure in the public’s mind, even though it’s use has become common. This is one approach we can expect to see continue in the foreseeable future, as it’s mentally associated with future progress, i.e. with technological advances.  And a belief (however illogical) that the power of technology can better the world.
