Eclectic style in interior design involves the bringing together of different styles and periods in a harmonious manner. It’s one of the most sophisticated and rewarding interior styles, however, it can be challenging to achieve. Also, to clear any misunderstanding, this style doesn’t simply imply “anything goes”.
When designing,
the point of departure should always be function or utility, i.e., how is the room
supposed to be used; it’s quite important to clarify this, before going out and
starting to buy furniture and decorative pieces. As a guideline, a predominant
colour serves as the unifying factor in the design, pulls together the
composition, offering cohesion. We should strive for balance in scale and
symmetry. It’s suggested to have a focal
point, node, or eye-catching element; this could be an existing fireplace,
or, we could create an accent wall; it could even be some bold, decorative
item. Last, but not least, we should be consistent in the whole approach.
Some designers
insist the eclectic style should flow from one room to the next, i.e., the
whole house should be carried out in the same style. However, we would disagree,
suggesting that in larger homes there’s freedom to do so much more, than to be
enslaved to a single style approach. To comprehend the absurdity of this, try
to impose on a teenager an eclectic bedroom…
A little pointer
at the end: Don’t sample paint colours on the wall, but on individual paint
boards that you may carry with you to the stores. Because, when painting
different colours on the wall, weird things happen, due to a phenomenon termed
“colour interaction”. Which means,
you’ll never be able to perceive a colour correctly. By the way, a colour
sample should be ideally viewed under northern light, which renders it in a
neutral fashion.
Summing up, in
the eclectic style, furniture, rugs, paintings, objects d'art, and throw
pillows, should be selected and coordinated accordingly to offer cohesion in
the interior environment.
