Looking for an exotic, colourful
approach to the treatment of your interiors? Look no further. The ethnic style
has all of these elements and more, as we’ll see below.
It’s essentially the casual style of faraway
lands or cultures, such as African or Indian, where the arts and crafts elements
prevail. It shouldn’t be of surprise then that it comes across as unusual and
at times mysterious.
The patterns, shapes, materials, textures
and decorative elements, are unique to this style. Specifically, when it comes
to African art, wood-carved masks or certain miniature wood statues, often
ceremonial and tied to superstition or paganism, stand out. Wood is king, while
straw and colorful fabrics are also popular. Beads are also associated with
this style. The ethnic style is closer to earth and more casual or relaxed.
Whereas in Indian art, brass decorative
elements such as plates, with engraved letters and forms, are characteristic. Tigers
are also important to this culture, respected in a regal manner or simply out of fear, so these are depicted in various forms. At times, common to both cultures is the
depiction of the elephant, closely connected with the life of these folks.
Floor rugs and loose fabrics are also
common and integral to the approach of this style, which is complemented by
various decorating knick-knacks. Summing it up, this stylistic approach is indeed colourful, close to earth and definitely casual.
