Interior Design is occasionally about accessories, decorative items, and the like. All these are elements that contribute to the vitality of a space and set the appropriate atmosphere in the interior environment. Although today "decoration" is kept to a minimum. Partly responsible for that is the prevailing style of minimalism (A movement that we don't necessarily condemn).
However, essentials such as picture frames, candles and the like, will always be popular; otherwise an interior will be stark and devoid of life. Regarding accessories, there's a new aesthetic, away from embellishments and unnecessary decoration. The last, the word "decoration", is diligently avoided by professional designers, as it refers to the past when it prevailed and overpowered the interior.
Remember those porcelain or alabaster bibelot that were popular in the not too distant past, the ones now flooding garage-sale tables and antique shops? Most of them suddenly appear as kitsch; although a few of these pieces are indeed works of art and could easily be accommodated within contemporary spaces.
Items such as coat racks, umbrella stands or ashtrays (are you still smoking?), tend to be absent in smaller spaces, especially the first two. Also, some prefer not to display many picture frames but to have a single digital one that constantly changes shots. This is debatable, and it reminds us of the argument about the real book vesrus the e-book: A real book has a certain tactile quality, smell and feel, versus a plastic gadget that needs a battery to work and is vulnerable to water.
A professional designer can set the appropriate tone or style in the interior, based on the client's desires and the design concept. He/she can choose and synthesize appropriately all these different elements that complement, enhance and energize an interior environment; and ultimately make people happy.
