Interior Design is about styling interiors; rendering life and flair to interior space. Simply put, interior design and a certain style, go hand-in-hand. Some of the most "popular" interior design styles will be highlighted below. This is not an exhaustive list, by any manner; it only serves as a categorization of the most common styles, one may encounter today.

AVANT-GARDE: French term, referring to the very new or progressive. The focus is on experimentation versus the status quo.
COUNTRY STYLE: The traditional approach found in American and English farmhouses or cottages, Spanish haciendas, French chateaus, Greek Mediterranean homes, and Tuscan villas.
CLASSIC: The more formal timeless or enduring elegance in interiors.
DECONSTRUCTION: The seemingly negating approach of the structural logic. Theoretical and cerebral. Applied mostly in architecture, in the recent past.
ECLECTICISM: Not the dominance of a singular style, but the masterful marriage of compatible styles. A synthetic approach, bridging the past with the present.
ECOLOGICAL: The green or renewable resources approach.
ETHNIC: It’s essentially the casual style of faraway lands or cultures, such as African or Indian, where the arts and crafts elements prevail.
GOTHIC: On its way out, the focus is on the dark and the mysterious (From "Gothic Architecture"). Encountered mostly in commercial applications, such as bars or restaurants.
MINIMALISM: As the term implies, it's the insistence on the minimal. White, black and grey are the dominant colours.
MODERNISM: The still popular Modern Movement in architecture, born in the Bauhaus: Less is more, is the famed creed of the Movement.

POP ART STYLE: The approach that emerged in the USA and UK in the 1950s, including imagery from popular and mass culture, advertising and graphics, emphasizing the banal or kitsch, often with an element of irony; comic books or mundane objects are glorified.
SEVENTIES: A stylistic approach seemingly frozen in the particular decade, emulating the characteristic frivolous attitude, while brown and orange hues prevail.
TECH: Technological or high-tech. The insistence on the cutting edge of technology.
URBAN: As the name implies, it's encountered in cities, i.e., mostly in apartments, studios and condos. It's logical, stark and often modular.

SOME FINAL THOUGHTS...

These are the dozen or so styles prevalent today. Some professional designers only work within a certain style, while others experiment, depending on the project, the client, the design concept and the budget.

One may ask, so which style should I use? This is a difficult question as it's based on many factors; it appears to be subjective, but this is partly true. You may visit a relative POST to know everything relative to this question.
