MINIMALISM IN INTERIOR DESIGN: MINIMALISTIC INTERIORS - THE BARE ESSENTIALS

A focus on exclusion rather than inclusion and the adoption of certain colour schemes, are some of the key approaches of this interior design style. The interior environment is spare or stripped to its essentials. The minimalism movement emerged in Western art, essentially after WWII. French painter Yves Klein (1928-1962) was famous for his monochrome (i.e. single colour) paintings, especially the blue painting. He is considered a forerunner of minimal art.

Minimalist interiors are usually executed in white, black, or grey; generally, in monochrome. The interiors are devoid of excess elements or decoration. Also, the bare minimum furniture is chosen, so it occupies a small portion of the floor area. The idea is to let the structure and its integral forms (architecture) have the main say, so restraint is exercised in selecting additive elements. The space itself is the protagonist, however, with a word of caution: Not to say that the professional designer is powerless or useless. Indeed, minimalism requires the commission of an experienced professional designer.

Minimalist architecture has some common principles with Modern Architecture and its creed less is more. Once tremendously popular, especially with architects, it still has fans the world over. Minimalism is still very relevant in interior design and architecture.
