THE CLASSIC STYLE IN INTERIOR DESIGN: TIMELESS OR ENDURING ELEGANCE IN INTERIORS

If there's a single interior design style where you can't go wrong, this is it: The classic interiors approach offers undisputedly timeless elegance. It epitomizes the "good life".  As such, it's for folks who might be on the conservative side (of course there's nothing wrong with that) and are resistant to change; or for middle aged wealthier people. This style, more than any other, says a lot about its owners; it conveys status and self-assurance.

Merriam Webster defines “classic” as “serving as a standard of excellence: of recognized value… traditional, enduring”. (1) This style comes across as more luxurious or noble; some, by today's standards may call it "stuffy" although we would disagree with this characterization. Simply because it's subjective.

The rooms are usually painted in two or three colour schemes, while special details like wall or ceiling mouldings and fireplaces, deserve to be highlighted in a separate colour. Gold leaf may also be used as an accent.

The approach involves using classic furniture pieces from the 19th and early 20th centuries, more subtle colours for drapes or curtains and monochrome or floral throw pillows for the sofa or couch. Floors tend to be marble or granite, while bedrooms tend to be covered in parquet flooring. The Living Room may host a piano, especially a grand piano. One may also encounter an oversized oriental vase on the floor. While the Dining Room may be adorned by an overhead crystal or bronze chandelier and silver candelabras. Paintings, lithographs or etchings, a golden framed mirror on the wall or fireplace, and more noble accessories or decorative pieces in onyx, alabaster or china, complete the picture.

Such an interior doesn't necessarily need to look dated or out of sync with today's lifestyle. On the contrary, a competent interior designer will make this style appealing or interesting.

This style persists as it's time proven. Every designer should understand this style and be adept at using it, before proceeding to experiment in new approaches. Not unlike learning a musical instrument like piano or violin, where after mastering the musical scales, we have to study classical music pieces written expressly for the particular instrument.

Needless to say, the classic or timeless elegance in interiors, are very much in favor in certain countries, such as in much of the Middle East, or the U.K. Such an interior when executed well, can indeed enrich our lives and serve its function well into the future, more so than any other style. Therefore, while more expensive at first, it may be more economical in the long run, considering that a classic or timeless interior is relevant for many decades. While other interior design styles come and go, a classic, enduring or timeless interior, will always be just that: Timeless.
