Art or artwork used to be a status symbol deserved for the wealthy or the
elite. Oversize oil paintings, statues and ornate art pieces, were adorning the interiors
of cavernous spaces. While the dining room had ornate bibelot of alabaster or porcelain. However, times have changed, especially after Bauhaus and
its creed of mass production.
Today, art or artwork of a different scope, has become widely available and
rather affordable. Paintings such as acrylics, are even factory produced on a
canvas. Posters that are considered artistic, such as black and white
photographs of abstract objects or landscapes, are even sold in large hardware stores or furniture stores.
Photographs and smaller art pieces like pastels or watercolor (aquarelle)
can be bought at small art galleries at great prices. It seems there’s an
abundance of talent out there and the competition is fierce, driving prices
down. As a result, the consumer benefits.
Sculpture has been redefined to include more mechanistic put-together articles
or even elaborate driftwood found on a beach. Finally, even utilitarian objects such as picture frames can be “artistic”.
Not to mention some interesting wall clocks.
It's hard to imagine a bare wall in a living room, without anything on it. Unless, the design concept of course requires it.
Are paintings and sculpture still relevant in interiors? The answer is a resounding yes.
Art or artwork can put the finishing touches on a space and tie together the design concept. It can also serve as a personal statement of the owner or the owners; ultimately making them happy.
