URBAN STYLE: THE LATEST INTERIOR DESIGN STYLE

If one were to pick a single interior design style for the 21st century, chances are he/she would think of Urban. As the name implies, we would expect to find this style in cities. Cities for the first time in human history have overtaken both the suburbs and the villages, and as a result, since the first decade of our century, more than half the world's population lives in cities.

Cities are where apartments or flats, condos, studios and efficiencies prevail. These spaces tend to be smaller or very small, compared to single family homes. So efficient space usage is of the essence. This gave rise to a whole new furniture approach and style. Furniture had to be smaller in size, yet flexible; which meant adaptable to change. As an example, coffee tables tend to be smaller and capable of being stored away. Dining Room tables, when chosen (for some folks use oversize coffee tables because of lack of space), tend to be expandable. While beds could also double as sofas, couches or futons, often with storage space underneath.

Materials seem to be lighter, with an emphasis on practicality or the do-it-yourself approach. King of the game (without intending to advertise, as we have no income from advertising) of course is Ikea, and to a lesser extent Bo Concept, Habitat and KARE. Colors are lighter, typically oak or birch. Or, painted pine. Wood, laminate, lacquered wood, glass and steel is used for tables. 

Throw pillows, light fixtures, picture frames and accessories often with a twist (like oversize clocks), complete the picture. The Urban Style is essentially meant for middle class, or lower class homes, which implies it's affordable. Although some pieces are more costly.

Surprisingly, the Urban Style is still going strong, with no signs of withdrawing; and for a good reason. It captivates the spirit of the times, it's practical and at the same time it's very affordable. Also, it’s relatively humble as a statement, conveying the owner’s self-confidence. What else can one ask for?
