A Design Concept is the central idea behind a project. It's the cohesive or driving force, tying all the individual pieces or elements together. Without a concept, everything would be entirely subjective and the whole design would sort of "fall apart".
Some call it a Design Theme, however, professional designers try to avoid this rather simplistic or faddish term. Professionals always employ design concepts in their projects. Whereas, amateurs simply copy an idea from this magazine, another idea from Helen's home and another idea from an ad in the newspaper, etc. Needless to say, the end result is very mediocre. It's like a Frankenstein creation...
An example of a design theme is the open sea shell, used for the Sydney Opera House, on the port of Sydney, by Danish architect Jørn Utzon (1973).
Let your unhindered imagination be your guide; and think of a concept to govern your design. Occasionally, effective for this are brainstorming techniques of free thinking.
