Interior Design is the art of shaping interior space. It involves the poetic form shaping, and the rendering of style and function, in interior environments.
The former term decoration has become obsolete for the professional designers. It essentially involved the choosing of curtains, sofa throw pillows, paintings and carpets, by self-taught "designers". The professional interior designer came into being in the early 20th Century. France, England, Russia and the United States are countries with an acknowledged history in interior design, dating back to the 19th Century. Before that period, even in the Renaissance, it was mainly practiced by master builders ("Architects"). Also, Gesamtkunstwerk, is a notion related to interior design, involving the merging or synthesis of the arts and an incredible amount of detail.
Last, but not least, a new specialization has emerged, that of interior architecture, practiced by licensed interior designers or registered architects. It involves a more holistic scope and it's often the approach of choice for certain projects.
From heritage to cutting edge, the interior designer balancing passion and strategy, enhances the quality and function of interior environments.Today, interior design has become immensely popular and accessible to the masses. Magazines, television shows and how-to books are an evidence of the extent of the phenomenon. After all, designed environments make us happy and allow us to live or work healthily and more efficiently.
Designers
occasionally flirt with the idea of total control of a project even overriding
the client’s wishes, aiming for a Gesamtkunstwerk
approach; “a total work of art”, or the blending of the arts, a term generally
attributed to composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883), although its origin may have been
earlier (Also known as Universality
Theory). In it, attention to miniscule detail is paid attention to, the
designer being aware of the larger picture.
