The interior design craze is evident in the countless magazines, how-to books, television shows, blogs and the like, as well as the proliferation of specialty design furniture stores. Suddenly, the word design is part of our everyday vocabulary, as for the first time in history, design and interior design is truly accessible to the masses.
So, how often should I renew or makeover my space, be it my home, office or store? Well, it depends. There are many variables to consider, such as:
- Is your space beginning to look its age? Is the paint on the walls beginning to fade, peel off, or, is the ceiling covered with a thin coat of nicotine (Hope you're not smoking)?
- Are the materials beginning to look dated, as it's been a while since any renovation was done? In other words, does your furniture and everything else screams you're still trapped in the seventies?
- Do you feel the need to renew your live or work space to feel better and be energized or motivated?
- Did the children marry or moved out of their house and their bedrooms are just empty space that could be incorporated into another space?
- Do you want to increase the size of the public areas of the house (for example the Living Room), since you spend there a lot more time?
- Were you so busy the last few years with your work or personal problems (such as a health problem of a relative or your divorce) that you completely neglected your home?
- Were you in financial distress for a long time, or were you saving funds for investments?
- Are you planning to renovate an adjacent space because of flood damage and the like?
- Are you planning an addition in an adjacent space, that may serve as an opportunity to take a macro or holistic look at everything?
- If it's a commercial space, what does the competition do? How often do they renovate? Especially critical if it's a store, a cafe or a restaurant.
If the answer was affirmative to any of the above questions, it's time to actually plunge in the wonderful world of design. As a guideline, homes need to be renewed every seven to ten years, depending on the use or the abuse (Children, pets, smokers). Work spaces need to be renovated every five years. While restaurants, cafes, stores and the like, every three to four years.
Change can be exciting. Renewing or renovating your space, with someone you trust, could be a cherished and exciting experience; an opportunity to discover your artistic side and have some interesting discussions with a design professional. So, renovate, renew, or makeover your space and enjoy!
