WORKING WITH AN INTERIOR DESIGNER

Before you attempt to work with a professional interior designer, it's assumed you've done your homework and checked out a few things, such as his/her credentials, key projects and method or approach of working with clients; including his/her fees.

There are as many approaches as there are designers. However, they all fall within three broad categories. Some are despotic, overshadowing the client and imposing their way of thinking and particular aesthetics. They usually get away with it if they are rather famous and you sought them out.

Others are rather casual, putting you at ease from the start. A cup of coffee, rolled up sleeves and the kind of discussions you'd have with a friend.

Most designers fall somewhere in the middle, between these two extremes. At any rate, the client has to seek a professional he/she can relate to and feel comfortable with to associate. Because sometimes for larger projects, the association can last for a while.

Usually, the designer would present his/her ideas, and the client would critique them. The designer would then take the client's input, rework the schemes, maybe present a few more and meet again. This process would go through a few iterations, until designer and client agree on a final scheme to pursue. Which is then realized. This is the classical studio approach and it's a time-proven method.
