Objets
d’art, a French term, literally means “works of art”, and refers to small,
non-utilitarian decorative art items. In its more valuable, rare or collectors’
version, the term becomes Objets de vertu.
Examples of objets d’art are gold boxes, small
clocks, statuettes, hardstone or ivory carvings, metalwork items (with or
without enamel), non-utilitarian porcelain and glass, and similar items. Objets de vertu are objects of virtue at a higher or more refined standard and executed in richer materials. Examples of objets de vertu are
the Fabergé eggs, objects of the Ming dynasty or later imperial China, and the
like.
Peter Carl Fabergé
(1846-1920), a Russian jeweler, is associated with his now famous eggs, in the
style of Easter eggs, executed in precious metals and gemstones. The Imperial Coronation Egg is one of the
most iconic of all the Fabergé eggs. The house of Fabergé created objects of
superb aesthetics and craftsmanship, and the Imperial Easter Eggs were no
exception; as a testimony, their articles are exhibited in museums, as in the Fabergé
Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
FOR LUXURIOUS INTERIORS
Are these little
decorative items, or miniature artwork, still relevant in interior design, where straight forward
simplicity of expression seems to rule? The answer is yes; in classic or
eclectic applications. At any case, these decorative items, give a personal touch to a
more formal or austere space and an owner may be emotionally attached to them; being an
acquisition from an auction, or a rare buy from a far-away trip. Objets
d’art, and especially Objets de vertu preferred by the wealthy, will always have a role in luxurious homes and opulent interiors. After all, the upper class, will always wish to differentiate its lifestyle, through expensive or prized decorative items.
