Even seasoned
designers occasionally resort to quick and simple, time-proven tricks. We’ll
share with you some of those no-loose tips.
- Paint dark, even black, the walls of a room, while the furniture and accessories will act as a contrast. The result can be truly impressive.
- Think what the room is all about. In other words, a Living Room implies a sofa, a Dining Room implies a table, while a Bedroom implies a bed. This simple thought generates these ideas: A unique chandelier over the Dining Room table, a quality sofa with throw pillows in the Living Room and an interesting headboard for the bed, accompanied by decorative pillows.
- Hang many pictures or posters on the wall, of various sizes. All of these will “read” as a composition.
- Decorative finishes: Try painting the window trim, the baseboard, or the crown moulding (Ceiling trim).
- Hang an oversize mirror on the wall or support it on the floor; perhaps one with an elaborately carved wood frame. It’s both elegant and acts as a focal point. So, think where you’ll place the mirror, considering carefully what it will reflect (Will it reflect perhaps an antique or a chandelier?).
- Sofa pillows, can make a sofa come to life and at the same time make a space cozy. Use enough of them; not the tiny ones that look skimpy; use many and in different colours, or in groups of twos.
- Try a table runner for the Dining Room table. It provides that extra touch.
- Prefer the affordable luxury of fresh flowers, even wild flowers you cut yourself; also, live plants or trees. Flower vases and pots enter the equation, so give it some thought, in light of the overall scheme (Shapes, sizes, colours, and texture are issues to be considered).
It's no secret: Follow these decorating tips or tricks and your space will effortlessly stand out.
