In
the 21st Century the term design has
become an everyday word. The shaping of
our interior environments, whether in the form of simple decoration, a limiting term
becoming outdated, interior design, or even the more sophisticated interior
architecture approach, has come of age. Star
designers like Philippe Starck and starchitects like Frank Gehry or the late
Zaha Hadid, have surprised and inspired us, with their design excellence and idiosyncratic avant-garde.
As
most post-industrial societies became affluent, new materials and manufacturing
techniques were developed and the internet broke down the barriers giving us
unprecedented access to different ideas and lifestyles across the globe,
interior design emerged as a hobby, favorite pastime or creative outlet for
many. Most of us have at one time or another played designers, experimenting and
changing our own interior spaces or rooms. In fact, changing our interiors was
never before so easy or so affordable, partly due to industrial and modular
approaches favored by global furniture and accessories retail giants.
Magazines,
television shows, the internet and social media, even advertisements, all
address this phenomenon, this new global craze; celebrating interiors in all
their dimensions. We’re being bombarded with wow interiors, a parade of styles,
views of the desired aesthetic or the sense of what is considered beautiful. Which
of course is relative, although the New World Order would have us think
otherwise, wishing to impose a tyrannical uniformity.
Modern
man unfortunately spends a considerable amount of time indoors, in his home,
workspace or elsewhere, subsequently the importance of interiors is
unquestioned. Psychologists even support that a properly designed interior can
positively affect our mood, for example, being more serene at home or more
productive at work; most of us would tend to agree having had similar
experiences.
As
we’re adopting a sustainable or green attitude and way of life, through
recycling, conservation of natural resources and the like, interior design has also
become a part of this global movement. Interiors now feature all natural
materials, which are definitely healthier.
This
is dedicated to all the aspiring designers, the do-it-yourself (DIY) folks and
the professionals of course. Written in a clear, unpretentious language, all of
you can find in here relative and useful information, theoretical as well as
practical. So take the plunge and welcome to the wonderful and exciting world
of interior design, where we shape our environments which in turn may shape us.
Enjoy designing the new interior spaces of the Century.
