INTERIOR DESIGN SPECIALIZATION: WHAT IS CONTRACT DESIGN?

Contract Design

The term Contract Design is a specialization in the practice of Interior Design, specifically, it’s in reference to the design of business and institutional environments.

An Interior Designer may focus on the residential sector, or the commercial sector (Contract Design); while some firms handle both sectors. Likewise, manufacturing concerns making fabrics, furniture, accessories, wallcoverings or lighting, may target the residential sector, Contract Design sector, or both.

As a rule Contract Design items are of a higher level of quality, have a higher durability, resist fading and can take more abuse. Exactly what you’d expect in hotels, restaurants, lobbies, restaurants, doctors’ offices, high-use spaces like children playrooms and the like. Contract Design items tend to be more stylish, of trendy materials or designs. Needless to say they could also be used in residential applications (While certainly not available at the local paint or home store, they’re acquired through an Interior Design professional).

Contract Design projects like retail stores are renovated more often, sometimes even on a schedule. Contract Design projects tend to be more complex, the professional designer’s involvement more extensive, therefore professional fees are higher compared to residential projects.

Below there’s a list of issues relevant to the field of Contract Design:

  • More stylish and trendy materials and designs
  • High quality of finish
  • Durability
  • Vandal resistant (Occasionally available as an option)
  • Fade resistant
  • Easy cleaning and maintenance
  • Flexibility and expandability – For future renovations
  • Fire resistance
  • Fulfill higher health and safety requirements and code regulations (Consult the applicable codes)
  • Limited availability: These can be purchased only through the interior design trade
As seen, Contract Design requires extensive professional experience as it involves a higher level of detail and design expertise. It’s not for the novice, as time schedules are an issue and legal implications are often involved.
