Carpets
and rugs add warmth and a sense of coziness to a room, provide limited sound
insulation on the floor, while complimenting the interior design scheme. Although
wall-to-wall carpeting doesn’t enjoy its former popularity (especially in the
U.S and Anglo-Saxon countries), contemporary carpets and Persian rugs serve as
accent pieces and seem more in tune with the times.
Traditionally,
the fibers of carpets were natural, being wool or silk, but in the 20 th. C.
they became synthetic in order to reduce costs, mostly acrylic (which tends to
fuzz or peel somewhat easily), polypropylene, polyester, or wool blends. However,
wool carpets tend to last longer.
For
the most discriminating applications, Persian rugs are preferred, being
associated with superlative luxury. Persia (modern day Iran) has a rather long
and distinguished history in the craft of carpet making, going back for
centuries; even today the carpet industry contributes sizably to that country’s
economy. Persian rugs are hand-made, use natural fibers, being wool (preferably
the pile is of sheep’s wool, while the dyes are natural) or more costly silk. In
the most expensive Persian rugs, for example in Senneh carpets (from the area
of Persian Kurdistan), there are up to 400 knots (asymmetric) per square inch. Countries
of origin are of course Iran, while lesser quality articles or copies originate
in Pakistan, Armenia, Egypt, India, or Turkey.
As
an alternative, Scandinavian countries are associated with more contemporary
carpet designs, monochrome or patterned. They seem to compliment Modern or
Urban Style interior design schemes. Synthetic carpets should be avoided as
they’re non ecological, having a toll on the environment. Last, carpeting
requires regular cleaning while it can also harbor dust mites and bacteria, adversely
affecting people suffering from allergies or other ailments.
