Marketing strategy is a must. |
Unless
we wish to design our own space or that of family or close friend, we’ll need
to engage in marketing in order to locate and secure clients; and once the
project is over, to have them as repeat clients in the future, or to be sure
they’ll refer a friend to us.
Talent
is no longer the key to success. The world has plenty of talented people. However,
not all of them are busy. The reason is simple: exposure.
Undeniably
success is a function of an effective marketing strategy. What
are the options available? Actually, quite a few, some of which are delineated
below:
- Form a partnership with a professional who has superb marketing skills. Alternatively, pursue the following.
- Utilize all the appropriate social media to showcase our work and effectively promote ourselves. Obviously one needs to have more than a basic knowledge of computer and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) skills.
- Maintain a professional site and also a blog.
- Write appropriate articles either in traditional or electronic media.
- Give public lectures on design issues.
- Be involved as a volunteer, in your community or not-for-profit organizations.
- Sponsor a sports or other event, including a classical music performance.
- Appear as an expert on radio or TV, either as a guest or by having our own regular show.
- Network with fellow professionals and be involved in our professional society.
- Attend marketing and P.R. (Public Relations) courses or workshops.
- Entertain and invite past and prospective clients.
- Teach in a college or university (provided we have earned at least a postgraduate degree), to get our name out there.
- If possible, hire a Marketing Manager with excellent marketing and P.R. skills.
- If our professional association permits, we may engage in dignified advertising.
- We should constantly meet people and make it a point to let them know what we do.
- At the end of the projects, we should ask our clients to evaluate their experience and offer suggestions for improvement.
Marketing
is so essential it should be a part of our daily routine, even if we’re swamped
with work. Otherwise we’ll end up having idle periods, and a firm or even a one
person office cannot survive in the long run. Obviously one needs to invest in
himself (or herself) and marketing is a good start; we need to establish an
annual marketing budget and stick to it. It’s a must to have a weekly marketing
meeting; if we’re a one-man (or woman)-show we should allocate a day every week
to think and brainstorm on marketing. And set a course to follow, ultimately
setting short range and long range goals.
Last,
but utterly important, we ought to make sure clients perceive us as an expert
in our field, who is also sincere, polite and has interpersonal skills. Clients
want someone interesting they can talk, who they can also trust. Only then word
of mouth will work.
