Le Corbusier: Villa Savoye, Poissy, France |
As architects, interior designers, artists and
craftsmen know well, experiment and experience matters. Experimentation and
experience need to be in harmony; below, you’ll understand why.
Experimentation is related to the idea of the AVANT-GARDE ,
a sense of fresh air and a pillar of the arts. Parenthetically, architects
often experiment with furniture design as an economical alternative to trying
the same with buildings.
WHAT IF?
Experience comes with years and years of practice and
professional maturity. While practice is important, it can also hinder a
designer, if he/she is caught in the daily professional routine, churns out
paintings or buildings, without having to think “what if?”.
On the other hand, experimentation can produce an
avant-garde work, even if the designer is in the very early stage of his/her
practice; there are many examples to verify this. While experience assures that the roof the architect designed doesn't leak, he/she will be remembered posthumously only for the avant-garde produced...
Therefore, it should be clear by now, that a balance
or harmony is needed, between experimentation and experience. Then, the end
result is often WOW!
